VII. Facts about Chernobyl
On 26 April 1986, at Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl powerplant there was a sudden power output surge, and when an emergency shutdown was attempted, a more extreme spike in power output occurred, which led to a reactor vessel rupture and a series of explosions. This event exposed the graphite moderator of the reactor to air, causing it to ignite. The resulting fire sent a plume of highly radioactive smoke fallout into the atmosphere and over an extensive geographical area. Over 190 tons of radioactive materails were released into the environment.
The fire at the reactor burned for a full ten days and a major emergency operation began. Scientists were worried that a further explosion could occur, producing a force of 3-5 megatons (90-150 times greater than the force of the Hiroshima bomb). An explosion of this magnitude would have resulted in the whole of Europe being exposed to enormous radioactive contamination. Around 250 firemen were called and, despite being exposed to dangerous levels of radiation, many of them stayed and risked their lives to bring the situation under control.
Most of the 400,000 men, women and children who were relocated after the accident have never returned home. The evacuees are, for the most part rural people who had been used to a traditional self-sufficient way of life, producing their own food, and living in villages where their families had lived for several generations. The skills of these peasant farmers are useless in a city and as a result unemployment is high. Many are stigmatised by the local population and referred to as “Chernobyls”.
Countless lives in the Chernobyl affected areas have been destroyed by ill health. What we are witnessing is the slow erosion of a nation’s health. Scientific research shows that the people are faced with soaring levels of infertility and genetic changes, affecting the very future of their race. A sarcophagus was built to encase the damaged nuclear reactor and was designed to halt the release of further radiation into the atmosphere. However, hastily constructed this structure is now cracking open and leaking out lethal doses of radiation. The construction of a New Safe Construction structure is currently being studied by scientists.

VII. About the NGO ‘Chernobyl Children International’
The Chernobyl Children International (CCI) was established by Adi Roche in 1991 in the aftermath of the world’s worst nuclear disaster in Chernobyl in 1986. CCI is one of the leading international NGO accredited charities at the forefront of development work in Belarus & Ukraine.
CCI has delivered over €90 million worth of aid to date, and brought over 21,000 children into Ireland on life-enhancing Rest & Recuperation. The overall objective of our organisation is to develop medical and humanitarian programmes that facilitate long-term sustainable community-based solutions, building up local capacity and directly benefiting local communities including children and adults.
CCI works in partnership with the Belarusian Government and has fostered strong relationships with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Ministry of Labour & Social Protection, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health.
